Opportunity Details

Geo-Taggers! (Geospatial Volunteers - No experience necessary)

Interested in Geospatial? An expert in Geospatial? We need you!!!

After decades of extreme negligence, descendants thought it was not possible to find the graves of their loved ones interred in Washington Park Cemetery. By bringing the cemetery and its data into the future, descendants will be able to find where their relatives are buried in seconds, a process that takes hours to do now. Soon we will have a map of these historic sacred grounds that will guide us in the safe and ethical preservation of the site and will also guide descendants to their ancestry.

The Washington Park Cemetery GIS survey will not only assist descendants in locating their ancestry and reconnecting lineages, but it will also help to ensure the historic preservation of this heritage site by guiding restoration activities.

It will also produce a valuable resource to map our ancestry and other legacies. It will also be possible to begin the process of repairing roads and leveling. The extreme undulations from sunken graves and other displacements that create significant public hazards and make mowing difficult and costly cannot be fixed until all identifiable graves are mapped.  It will help to ensure that burials are accounted for and not disturbed during the restoration.

Volunteers will use GPS technology to locate and collect data on ground features and burial and access pathways. Ground features include monuments, markers, vaults, existing road boundaries, pedestals, underground markers, marked direct burial spaces, and other ancestral artifacts. The pathways include road routes, rock, and gravel remaining, trench routes, pathway entry points, and building exterior walls that lead to interior building entry terminals. Volunteers will complete the GPS survey by using conventional land surveying equipment (Trimble r2 Receiver) and safe, non-damaging sub-terrain locating equipment to meet requirements.

Volunteers will use GPS to determine the horizontal position of ground features and will format ground features and access pathway data for entry into the ArcGIS Mobile Application using the entity naming convention attribute fields and domain values specified. Each ground feature and access pathway requiring geospatial coordinates shall be located within 2.8 inches of its true ground position in the horizontal plane. Geospatial coordinates for the location of monuments and markers shall be recorded at the center of the structure, whenever possible. Geospatial coordinates for the location of hard-to-access or large pedestals, markers, and other marked structures or direct burial spaces and subterranean unmarked burial spaces shall be recorded for the top center of the feature or marker. Geospatial coordinate data for the location of access pathway lines shall be recorded at a minimum every 15 feet and each turn or bend in the pathway must also be recorded so that the coordinates for any point along the turn pathway will fall within the allowable accuracy.
