Saturday Academy Tutors

Guided by the principles of Catholic social teaching, Catholic Urban Programs advance the dignity of the human person, remediate the effects of poverty, and empower people to become self-sufficient through crisis intervention, housing security, and out-of-school-time programs. CUP operates its programs at eight locations in East St. Louis. 

Volunteers are essential to the daily work of the Catholic Urban Programs Out of School Time locations. Consistently helping with educating students, volunteers play a significant role in the academic success of the students in East St. Louis. Volunteers work closely with our Site Coordinators and Enrichment Instructors in serving Out of School Time students.

Looking for tutors two Saturdays a month from 9:30am-11:30am.

Duties

  • Contributes to students learning, growth, and advancement in OST Learning Lab.         

  • Demonstrates academic competence in subject area(s) relating to students’ homework.

  • Maintain a growth mindset toward students learning and teaching practices.

  • To encourage problem-solving with critical thinking skills.

  • Create personalized learning goals for students who struggle in academic areas.

  • Collaborate effectively with OST Staff and parents to increase students’ performance.

  • Assist in creating lessons and activities that raise reading levels of students in our program. (2023-2024 OST Focus)

Helpful Skills

  • Communicate in a positive, polite, and respectful manner

  • Initiative to perform duties under minimal supervision

  • Comfort level with teaching, tutoring and educating

  • Comfort level with searching internet

  • Excel, outlook, email

  • Capable of multi-tasking

  • Even-tempered, able to effectively serve people experiencing crises

  • Initiative to learn the programs and services of CUP

  • Flexible thinking/understanding that each day/week can be different than the one prior

Training:

  • Must complete volunteer orientation

  • Must complete Diocese of Belleville Child Protection Training and background screening

  • Complete three hours of tutoring and academic training
