Volunteer Financial Coach

The United Way is recruiting 15 new Volunteer Financial Coaches to partner with low-income families on meeting their savings goals and securing a better future.

United Way’s ASSET financial education and matched savings program equip families with the tools needed to become more financially stable. Trained Volunteer Financial Coaches walk alongside program participants on their journey to financial empowerment.
Volunteer Financial Coaches are paired with program participants to work toward their goal of saving $100 over four to six months. The first and foremost job of the coach is to be an accountability partner - help participants identify their successes and brainstorm ways to overcome their savings challenges.

By volunteering just 1 to 2 hours a month, you can provide the support a family needs to create a savings habit and accomplish their financial goals (i.e. pay off debt or save for their child’s education).

Training is provided to prepare you for coaching program participants, and United Way staff and fellow coaches are available to help you along the way. Upcoming financial coaching will be conducted virtually (phone, FaceTime, Zoom, etc.), due to the continued COVID-19 pandemic.

Nature of Work: The Volunteer Financial Coach will provide one-on-one support to program participants to help them work toward their financial and savings goals. Financial coaches meet via telephone or video call with their program participants monthly. For more information, please contact the Financial Stability Initiatives Program Manager listed below.

Length of Volunteer Commitment: Minimum of 4 months, maximum of 6 months (July-December 2022, with the opportunity to continue in future program years)

Volunteer Times/Location: Will vary based on participant’s and coach’s schedules; no more than 1-2 hours per month

Qualifications Needed:

  • Personal experience with goal achievement and responsible money management

  • Willing and open to working with individuals from low-income families

  • Ability to work with individuals in a respectful and non-judgmental manner

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and build trust

  • Ability to encourage and motivate

  • Ability to practice effective listening skills

Training Requirements:

  • Complete background check prior to training

  • Complete virtual Volunteer Financial Coaching Training. The next training is scheduled for Saturday, June 4, 2022, from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, Microsoft Teams.
