Let's Clean Up & Green Up The Hodiamont Tracks

Residents of seven neighborhoods adjacent to the Hodiamont Tracks are planning a Clean Up & Green Up workday along the 3.5-mile former streetcar/bus line Saturday, August 10 from 9 a.m. to noon. Organizers, helmed by Overall Project & Volunteer Coordinator Judith Arnold, a resident of the Vandeventer neighborhood, are seeking 200 volunteers to join in the effort.

In 2018, Great Rivers Greenway, the public agency that connects the St. Louis region with greenways, conducted a Community Engagement Study to determine whether the Hodiamont Tracks should be turned into a greenway that would connect the St. Vincent Greenway, the future Chouteau Greenway, and numerous schools, parks, churches and neighborhoods along the way.

Those neighborhoods—Covenant Blu-Grand, Vandeventer, Lewis Place, Fountain Park, Academy/Sherman, Visitation Park, and West End—stretch from Spring Street in Grand Center, run west along the former streetcar right-of-way just north of Enright Avenue, and terminate at Skinker Boulevard. near Gwen Giles Park.

“The Great Rivers Greenways Community Engagement Study for the Hodiamont Tracks concluded that 95% of the community want a greenway along the Hodiamont Tracks,” said Judith Arnold. “One of the major concerns raised is ongoing maintenance. We’re beginning to tackle this issue with a cleanup day in hopes that residents living near the tracks will continue to maintain what will become a greenway.”

Residents and volunteers will assemble at 9 a.m. at Lane Tabernacle CME Church, 910 N. Newstead, and return to the church at noon for a thank-you lunch and party.

Participating programs include Brightside St. Louis, Neighborhoods United for Change, Great Rivers Greenway, Mission STL, North Newstead Association, Girl Scouts of America, Boy Scouts of America, Churches United in the 18th Ward and Residents In Support of the North Central Special Business District.

Arnold is joined in organizing efforts by Tom Schweiss, Great Rivers Greenway, Constance Siu, North Newstead Association, and others.
