Youth Garden Intern-Summer (w/ Education Dept.)

Gateway Greening supports more than 60 school- and youth-focused gardens. These gardens allow youth to learn through hands-on activities, experience healthy food and contribute to a garden that improves their school or community.

A Youth Garden Intern will support and/or lead garden-based activities at youth-focused gardens. Depending on the intern’s interests and site availability, the focus of the internship may be on working with a youth educator to facilitate lessons at a school garden, working with an afterschool program, summer camp, daycare, or early childhood education center to lead garden-based activities.

Interns may also assist with annual site visits, connecting with garden leaders at youth garden leaders in order to update Gateway Greening’s records and gain insight about the successful garden use and barriers to use.

Internship Duties

Youth Garden Outreach Focus

  • Visit and survey youth gardens to learn about challenges and successes of their programs
  • Facilitate communication and relationships between different youth gardens

Elementary School Garden Focus

  • Collaborate with Gateway Greening Youth Educator to plan lessons for the school garden that build on classroom instruction
  • Lead or assist Youth Educator in teaching weekly garden-based lessons, availability should be between 9-4pm most days

Curriculum Development Focus

  • Assist in researching and creating lesson plans for the Gateway Greening Seed-to-STEM K-5 curriculum
  • Create and compile assessments of student learning and garden engagement during Gateway Greening Seed-to-STEM program

Middle School Education Focus

  • Collaborate with School Programs Manager to create Middle-School garden-based lessons, focusing on leadership development and community-building
  • Assist in teaching weekly garden-based lessons, availability should be between 9-4pm most days

  • Teaching Skills

  • Vegetable gardening skills (planting and maintenance)

Desired Skills & Resources Required

  • Enjoys working with youth

  • Desire to learn gardening and educational skills

  • Comfortable speaking with a diverse range of people

  • Ability to adapt educational activities to the needs of youth at each school or youth garden facility

  • Valid driver’s license and use of a personal cell phone

  • Availability dictated by focus area

Structure of Internship

  • Timeline: Spring (March-May)

    • Exact start and end dates depend on the intern's schedule

  • 3-15 hours per week, depending on availability

  • Percent time spent:

    • Leading garden activities 70%

    • Research and planning 30%

  • Interns will receive Gateway Greening Orientation

  • Interns will participate in bi-weekly program meeting and monthly all staff meeting if their hours allow

  • Midterm assessment and final evaluation will be completed with supervisor
