Partnership Team Member: Supporting Formerly Incarcerated Men and Women

MISSION:

The vision of Concordance Academy of Leadership is to be a leader in understanding justice-involved adults, engaging and teaching them effectively, and developing in them the strength of character, wisdom and skills required to make a positive impact – improving the vitality and safety of the community around them. Concordance Academy is dedicated to restoring individuals, rebuilding families, transforming communities and advancing the field of re-entry services.

Concordance aims to be a one stop shop for men and women who are returning home from prison. Concordance professionals work side-by-side individuals six months before their release to create a customized life plan and continue assisting for a year after release, providing physical and mental health care, housing and legal assistance, a job pairing with one of our employment partners, and substance abuse counseling. Additionally, each Concordance participant receives a volunteer team full of dedicated community members who provide support through their transition.

CONCORDANCE PARTNERSHIP TEAM OPPORTUNITY:

Partnership Teams are crucial for providing a safety net to Concordance participants. Teams consist of 5-7 members willing to commit to loving and supporting a participant for one year. This looks different depending on the needs and goals of each participant. Teams often provide practical support (helping to coordinate transportation, prep for an interview, or write a budget) as well as emotional support (talking through family problems, going out to lunch, or attending an event together). Though each team functions differently, every team helps their participant feel surrounded by a sense of community during a transition through which many would feel isolated. Groups can signup together to create a team, or individuals can sign up and be placed on a team.

TIME REQUIREMENTS:

Concordance asks that Partnership Teams commit to working with a participant for a year. There is no set schedule for this opportunity, making it an ideal role for those with variable schedules. While teams should expect to maintain some sort of contact with their participant at least once a week, this contact could range from a call or text checkin in to an in-person get together. Since teams have 5-7 members, each member has team mates to help out through periods of busyness.

SKILLS AND ATTITUDE:

Volunteers come to us from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds and each has a unique set of skills they can use to support our participants. The only requirements for this opportunity are a compassionate heart and the patience and dedication to stand by a participant through both highs and lows.
